2. COMPOSITION / COMPONENT INFORMATION

Predominant component:

Chemical name:               1-propene homopolymer

Alternative name:            polypropylene

CAS No:                             9003-07-0

Minor components: Standard polypropylene additives (e.g. HALS UV stabiliser, organic and inorganic pigment colourants and fillers). Surface printed with standard flexographic printing inks.

3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION

 

General

Not classed as hazardous. Melted product adheres to skin and causes burns. Rolls can store electrostatic charge. Health effects: Inhalation

Low dust product under usual conditions of use. Dust or fine fibres may be created by cutting or mechanical abrasion of the material. No systemic toxicity if inhaled, but may cause irritation to nose or throat.

Ingestion

No systemic toxicity if ingested. No significant symptoms expected.

Skin

Skin absorption – not applicable. Not expected to cause any symptoms following dermalexposure.

Eyes

Exposure to dust (See “Inhalation”) could cause irritation.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

 

Inhalation

Inhalation problems with this product unlikely. No specific treatment, but if dust is inhaled, remove from source and seek medical attention if necessary.

Ingestion

Ingestion unlikely. If significant irritation or discomfort occurs, seek medical attention.

Skin

No hazard from product under normal conditions. If molten product is in contact with skin, cool rapidly with cold water. Do not pull solidified product away from the skin. Seek immediate medical advice.

Eyes

Thoroughly flush dust from eyes using clean water. Seek medical attention if discomfort continues.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

 

Melting point                       Approximately 165oC

Flashpoint                           343oC

Flammability                        Flammable. Melts and tends to shrink away from flame. Toxic vapours released when burnt.

Extinguishing media             Consider other materials involved when selectinghe extinguishing media. Use water spray, foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide.

Explosion hazards                 Explosion hazard from airborne dust.

Fire fighting equipment       For large fires use self-contained breathing apparatus.

Decomposition products        Predominantly carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

 

Handling

Employ appropriate safe lifting procedures when handling rolls. Avoid breathing dust if cutting large quantities of material.

 

Storage

Protect from dust. Store in cool, dry area. Avoid prolonged exposure to bright light.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION

 

OEL (EH40/2000)  ≥10mg/m3 total inhalable dust;  ≥4mg/m3 respirable dust, for 8 hour TWA.

 

Engineering controls

Ventilate to ensure dust exposure is below the recommended limits. If airborne dust exceeds exposure limits, use an approved dust respirator.

 

Personal protective equipment

Protective overalls and safety shoes when handling rolls.

Stability

Stable under normal handling and storage conditions.

Materials to be avoided Strong oxidation agents. Dangerous reactions None known.

Dangerous decomposition products

None known at room temperatures.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

 

Typical values for the base polymer from which the product is made:

The product is not toxic. Small particles can have physical effects on water and soil

organisms.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

 

The polymer is classified by the European Commission of 20.12.1993 in its list of waste materials on the same level as municipal waste (Guideline EWG 75/442, later modified by EWG 91/156).

The material can be re-used or re-cycled according to the regulations of Guideline EG 94/62.
